RIDE THROUGH THE HEART OF ARGENTINA

Stretching more than 5,000 kilometres from the far north of Argentina to the wild landscapes of Patagonia, Route 40 is one of South America’s most legendary road trips. Running from La Quiaca in Jujuy to Cabo Vírgenes in Santa Cruz, the route cuts through 11 provinces and showcases the country’s incredible diversity, from dramatic deserts and colourful valleys to towering mountains and ancient glaciers.

More than just a highway, Route 40 is an adventure that invites travellers to experience Argentina at their own pace. Whether travelling by campervan, motorbike, or car, the journey offers a sense of freedom that few holidays can match. Every stretch of road reveals new scenery, hidden villages, and opportunities for spontaneous discovery, making the route as memorable as the destinations themselves.

One of the highlights of Route 40 is the sheer variety of landscapes along the way. In the north, travellers encounter the striking rock formations of Valle de la Luna Cusi Cusi and the vast white plains of Salinas Grandes. Further south, the famous vineyards of Mendoza offer stunning mountain views and world-renowned wine experiences, while Bariloche captivates visitors with its lakes, forests, and outdoor adventures.

Patagonia delivers some of the most breathtaking moments of the journey. El Chaltén, known as Argentina’s trekking capital, attracts hikers and adventure seekers from around the world. At the same time, the mighty Perito Moreno Glacier stands as one of the country’s most spectacular natural wonders. These remote landscapes create a feeling of true escape, where nature dominates the horizon, and every stop feels unforgettable.

Route 40 is also home to remarkable cultural and historical sites. Travellers can visit the Sacred City of the Quilmes in Tucumán, explore the UNESCO-listed Cueva de las Manos with its ancient cave paintings, or drive through the dramatic Quebrada de las Flechas in Salta. Each destination adds another layer to the experience, connecting visitors with Argentina’s rich heritage and traditions.

For many travellers, the Route of the Seven Lakes in Neuquén is among the most scenic sections of the entire journey. Connecting San Martín de los Andes and Villa La Angostura, this route winds through forests and crystal-clear lakes framed by snow-capped mountains. It is the perfect example of how Route 40 combines adventure with moments of peace and natural beauty.

Travelling the full length of Route 40 requires time and preparation, with most visitors allowing at least three to four weeks to appreciate the experience fully. Some sections include gravel roads and long distances without services, making careful planning essential. A sturdy vehicle, plenty of supplies, and a flexible itinerary help travellers make the most of this epic road trip.

Ultimately, Route 40 is more than a route across Argentina; it is a journey through the heart and soul of the country. From the freedom of the open road to the excitement of discovering remote landscapes and cultures, every kilometre offers a new adventure and a story waiting to be told.
