THE WONDER OF VICTORIA FALLS

Straddling the border between Zambia and Zimbabwe, Victoria Falls, known locally as “Mosi‑oa‑Tunya” or The Smoke that Thunders, stands among the most dramatic spectacles of the natural world. The mighty Zambezi River surges over a basalt ridge and plunges into a deep gorge, spanning over 1,700 metres in width.

The thunderous roar of water, the spray rising high into the air, and the mist‑laden rainforest that flourishes nearby combine to create an atmosphere of wonder. On a clear day, you can feel the falls long before you glimpse them.

Why Visit Victoria Falls?

From immersive nature walks to heart‑racing adventure sports, Victoria Falls offers a breadth of experiences:

  • Walk the footpaths through the rainforest on the Zimbabwe side and gaze out over multiple sections of the falls, including Devil’s Cataract, Main Falls, Rainbow Falls and Horseshoe Falls.

  • In the late afternoon, take a tranquil dusk boat cruise on the Zambezi, with superb views of wildlife and sunset over the water.

  • For thrill‑seekers, white‑water rafting, bungee jumps, zip‑lining and helicopter ‘flight of angels’ rides offer dramatic vantage points and adrenaline.

  • Take advantage of the surrounding conservation areas: safari drives, rhino walks and game‑viewing in national parks just beyond the falls.

Best Time to Visit & Getting There

Timing your visit depends on what you want to experience:

  • High water season (February–May): The falls are at their most voluminous, offering dramatic spray and thunderous roar, but heavy mist may obscure some views.

  • Dry season (June–August): Water levels drop, views become clearer and outdoor adventures (rafting, bungee) are in full swing.

  • Low water season (September–November): The falls expose rock formations and opportunities like swimming in the Devil’s Pool become viable, though some viewpoints may be less dramatic.

Access is fairly straightforward: fly into Victoria Falls Airport (Zimbabwe side) or Livingstone Airport (Zambia side), and arrange a short transfer to your accommodation or the town centre.

A Few Practical Tips

  • Be prepared to get wet! The mist from the falls can drench you, especially during high water; a waterproof jacket or poncho is wise.

  • For currency: US dollars are widely accepted on the Zimbabwe side, and Zambian kwacha on the Zambian side; have small bills on hand.

  • If crossing the border between Zambia and Zimbabwe, ensure your passport is valid and you’ve checked visa requirements in advance.

  • Some activities are seasonal; check ahead to confirm availability (e.g., Devil’s Pool swims, rafting, flights).

  • Respect the natural environment: stay on marked paths, heed guides, and avoid disturbing wildlife or fragile rainforest areas.

Victoria Falls is one of the planet’s iconic natural destinations, an immersive blend of power, beauty and adventure. Whether you’re gazing at the cascading curtain of water, drifting on the Zambezi at sunset, or leaping into a gorge from a bridge, it is a place that stays with you.
